The TwoFace pedal was developed to celebrate GuitarKing's 35th anniversary in 2024. This special collaboration brought together GuitarKing, Nick van der Aa and Ad van Dongen (N.E.R.D) to create a unique pedal celebrating this significant milestone. GuitarKing selected the type of pedal and the TwoFace name, Nick designed the graphics, and Ad handled the electronic development and production of the TwoFace pedals.

The TwoFace is a fully handcrafted device that offers a versatile range of octave and fuzz sounds. Essentially, it is an enhanced version of the Tycobrahe Octavia, with added features that improve flexibility and address the limitations of the original design, while preserving the iconic Octavia sound. The TwoFace includes a switchable Octave and Fuzz mode, which can be controlled via a footswitch, along with separate volume controls for each of the modes.

DISCLAIMER: I do not claim to have invented anything new. The credits are with Roger Mayer who invented the circuit. I started with the original Tycobrahe schematic from Fuzz Central, made adjustments to the transistor configuration, and added new features to enhance the pedal's versatility. The schematic for repair and cloning purposes is provided on the last page, so you don’t have to trace the circuit yourself.

History of the Tycobrahe Octavia

The Tycobrahe Octavia has a fascinating history. It was originally designed by Roger Mayer in 1967 specifically for Jimi Hendrix. Hendrix used it on iconic tracks like "Purple Haze" and "Fire," and he affectionately referred to it as the Octavio.

The controls of the TwoFace to switch & adjust the effect to your needs are:

  • On/Off Switch: Pressing the left footswitch toggles the effect on and off, as indicated by a high-intensity dual-color LED. The LED displays the effect's activation status and the selected mode: blue for Octave and red for Fuzz.

  • Oct/Fuzz Switch: When the effect is activated, toggles between Octave and Fuzz mode. The indicator LED will illuminate blue for Octave mode and red for Fuzz mode.

  • Gain: This control allows you to adjust the gain level of the effect, which applies to both the Octave and Fuzz modes. The TwoFace is a high-gain effect, and setting the gain above 75% may introduce significant noise into the signal.

  • Vol Oct: With this control you can set the effect overall output volume in Octave mode

  • Vol Fuzz: With this control you can set the effect overall output volume in Fuzz mode
